50 Observational Hours with a Certified Athletic Trainer

I have the opportunity to observe a certified athletic trainer at Rocky Mountain-Hunter Hollow, a physical therapy facility, for fifty hours over the christmas break. Hunter Hollow specializes in geriatric care. This experience will provide meaningful direction on the use of athletic trainers in alternate environments, proper safety guidelines when dealing with geriatric patients, and administering progressive rehabilitation. Athletic trainers are also responsible for the referral of injured patients to physicians when necessary before further rehabilitation. In addition, I will get to talk to patients who are currently injured and engaging in a rehabilitation program and how they are influenced by the athletic trainer. Along with the hands-on work that athletic trainers do, they also provide write ups on the progress of rehabilitation programs, essential supplies needed for the patients when they are discharged, and other aspects of work pertaining to business and management. It is my hope to become educated on areas of athletic training that have not been brought to my attention before.

The larger purpose of my EDGE project is to meet the requirements to apply for the Athletic Training master’s program at Weber State. This project will help me gain valuable experience and will allow me to further my education in a career that I find meaningful. Obtaining a master’s degree is now required in order to become a certified athletic trainer, a goal that I want to achieve.
